The subtitle we gave to the Book of First Peter, “Perservere in the True Grace of God,” comes from this passage. In the closing of his letter our Apostle affirms that the letter itself is God’s grace to us. After today, we will have heard twenty-one sermons from First Perter-all for the purpose of our own confirmed faith.

Our spiritual warfare in this world involves three main enemies – the world, the flesh, and the devil. These enemies are being fought by all Christians all around the world all the time. We are fighting for the glory of Christ and the advance of His Gospel. The end will be glorious. In the meantime we need to learn to do battle well, and really trust our God. With all wisdom and power our God is exploiting suffering and evil to gain a glorious future. When suffering we should make these three maneuvers: free ourselves from self-concern, resist the devil with faith, and anticipate God’s restoration.
