Theology is important because what we believe affects how we live. If you’re a relatively new believer in Jesus, or if you’re a more mature Christian looking for a quick brush-up on basics of the faith, Christian Beliefs is for you. You will learn about the Bible, the characteristics of God, what it means that we are created in the image of God, what God has done for us in Christ, the purpose of the church, and much more. These truly are twenty basic beliefs that every Christian should know.

In the letter to the Philippians, we encounter two Christ-like models of selflessness: Timothy and Epaproditus. The church knew both of these men. These passages are much more than an inserted travelogue, however. Today’s passage highlights the value of sacrifice for the Gospel, to rejoice in sacrificing for the Gospel and all the progress made. The Apostle Paul had two main reasons for sending Epaphroditus back to Philippi.

We honor the Lord and His working by emulating Timothy’s motivation and character. The Apostle Paul wants to keep their partnership strong and always moving forward; and he knows that the biggest factor is the strength of the unity of the Philippian church itself. Unity needs to be strong and alignment needs to be tight. When a church is strongly unified it is able to be most effective in its Gospel partnerships. Gospel partnerships depend upon the spiritual, missional, and relational health of each church. And so, here are three reminders about this: we have all experienced the same Gospel, we must stay united in commitment to the same goal, and we can build up our unity by living in humility.

Striving Together for the Gospel - Daniel Holmquist - Philippians 1:27-30

So far in Paul’s letter to the Philippians we have heard a lot about their partnership in church planting over the last 6-12 years. Most recently we have read the Apostle’s report about his imprisonment for the Gospel. Now, we are entering the section of the letter containing some vital imperatives for the Philippian church (1:27-2:18). Our passage today is the paragraph that communicates the main burden of this whole letter: the Church lives worthy of the Gospel by standing firm in one spirit for the Gospel’s progress. As a united team, a church is to accomplish two missionary activities: advance the Gospel and be unafraid of opponents.

The Advent message for us today in Psalm 45 is this: let our hearts be stirred up by the ever-lasting and ever-growing praise of our Sovereign Christ. The “pleasing theme” is a wedding song for the Son of David.
